The largest square in the world

Our first stop on our third day in Beijing was Tiananmen Square. It had rained the night before and in the morning it was hazy again. That, however, didn’t stop the masses of foreign and mostly domestic tourists that gathered there. The square is pretty vast and definitely has an East Berlin/Pyongyang feel, with all the austere party buildings and monuments. The illusion is shattered when you look to the North and see the entrance to the Forbidden City, with the Mao portrait (recently replaced, after someone set the old one on fire) hanging over the gate.

The Monument to the People's Heroes lies in the center of the square. In the background, on flanking the square to the East, there's the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.

The Great Hall of the People, on the West side of the square

Beijing attracts tons of tourists, a lot of them from other parts of China. We saw a lot of students on field trips.

This was taken in the underground passage to the Gate of Heavenly Peace. There's a kitty behind the sack.
